Launch of new customised RoSPA training qualifications

By Amy Brant, RoSPA head of driver training

Some changes have recently been made to the RoSPA Diplomas in Advanced Driving and Advanced Riding Instruction.

The RoSPA Diploma in Advanced Driving Instruction has been replaced by the RoSPA Level 4 Award in Advanced Behavioural Driver Training and the RoSPA Diploma in Advanced Motorcycle Instruction has been replaced by the RoSPA Level 3 Award in Advanced Motorcycle Instructor Training.

These are qualifications for those who wish to work as fee-charging trainers. While the content is similar to the diplomas, and the courses still last for five days, each is an update to the diploma in that the techniques taught are better aligned with modern understandings of learning and teaching practice.

Both still enable successful delegates to apply for the respective Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) registers: the Register of Fleet Trainers and the Enhanced Rider Scheme.

These new qualifications are customised awards that benefit from being benchmarked against the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) level descriptors and are quality assured and regulated by RoSPA Qualifications. These courses are not on the Ofqual register. They are approved by the DVSA.

RoSPA Qualifications is a separate entity from other areas of RoSPA and operates independently, with its own governing body and management team.

RoSPA diploma holders who work as fee-charging trainers must take the relevant new qualification when they are next due to renew. Those members who hold a diploma but are not fee-charging trainers can maintain their diploma status by taking the usual test when they are next due to renew.

However, the diplomas will organically be phased out as more people choose to take the Level 4/Level 3 qualification.

RoSPA Advanced Driver and Rider members who take the new levelled qualification will be able to do so at a discounted rate by quoting their membership number at the point of purchase.
